The interview book《Dear, My Name》was inspired by the editor’s experiences as an exchange student, where people frequently introduced themselves and had to remember the names of people from diverse linguistic backgrounds. This experience sparked the editor’s curiosity about the symbolic meaning that each person’s “name” holds. The book comprises interviews with three people named Ji-Young, four individuals with other names, and a collection of 22 names. The significance of this book lies in its symbolic portrayal of “identity” through names. A given name cannot be chosen at birth, yet it represents and symbolises the self over a considerable period. For instance, we use our name when introducing ourselves, making it a primary medium that renders our invisible identity visible and serves as a link between us and others. The book focuses on this aspect of names, gathering the identities, contexts, and meanings encapsulated in the names of interviewees from various countries around the world. Each interviewee is, in essence, Ji-Young, another name, and you. Through this book, readers are invited.
